A large, abandoned Victorian hospital in the heart of Sao Paulo, Cidade Matarazzo became an artists’ playground for the project “Made by Brazilians.” Kenny Scharf, Arne Quinze, Joana Vasconcelos, Charley Case, Saner and others transformed the building with immersive installations in the weeks leading up to the Sao Paulo Biennial. Before plans to remodel the estate are put into effect, viewers are welcome to visit the space through October 11. Read more on Hi-Fructose.

Khanjar Dagger

  • Dated: late 18th / early 19th century
  • Culture: Indian, Mughal
  • Medium: steel, jade, rubies, gold, silver
  • Measurements: overall length 40cm

The Mughal dagger has a pistol-grip hilt of pale green jade with inlaid coloured stones set in gold and carved with flowers. The scabbard has with silver mounts pierced with foliage.

Educational specimen box, 1850. England. Via V&A

Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, on whose theories this box is based, was advocating a holistic and child-centred approach to the education of the young as early as the 1790s. He used a radically different approach at a time when most teachers had methods which depended upon the written word and the ‘correct’ answer, and relied on punishment to make their pupils comply.
